Theatrical lighting on occasion deals with symbol.
An intense down pool of light can by symbolic of isolation.
The color of the light (blue for night time, amber for daytime) can be symbolic only if there is a context for the color to be 'read' in.
More often though, the lighting instrument will have a pattern in it, breaking up the light into a leafy pattern, for example, to represent a forest.
The abstraction of symbol begs the audience to rely on their inherent knowledge of the archetype. Casting a pattern of a single window frame onto the floor suggests that the light is shining through the window -- but more so we recognize loneliness and despair.
Some patterns are break-up patterns, like a Rorschach test, the audience begins to read meaning into the patterns often suggested by the context of the stage event.
Theatrical lighting, in itself, does not have any symbolic meaning at all.
